About Us

At Mt. View Elementary, we love our kids and take very seriously our role in helping them get to where they are going. Some will grow up to be business owners, educators, scientists, some will be in the technical fields, and on it goes. With hard work, moments of joy, and our shared belief in your children — families and staff members – together we will give them the best start possible toward fulfilling their dreams. I truly believe there is no better place to be!

Mountain View Elementary has over 900 students, preschool through 6th grade, from many ethnicities and walks of life, and around 70 enthusiastic staff members. About 40 percent of our students are English Language Learners. We are home to the AVID program (grades 3-6), and Dual Language Immersion program (grades K-6). We are a school with a vision for our students. We believe every one of our kids has it in him or her to grow by leaps and bounds academically, and to cultivate the habits and characteristics needed to succeed. We believe it is our job to inspire passion for learning and to help our students develop a picture of themselves as college and/or career bound.

In grades 3 – 6, you’ll experience a college-going culture in our school. College pennants and bulletin boards give students the clear message that with hard work and determination they can get to college. We talk with our kids about having a growth mindset. A growth mindset implies wanting always to improve, persisting to overcome obstacles, and celebrating each others’ successes. Growth Mindset is an AVID tenant. Being an AVID school (Advancement Via Individual Determination) has provided us a framework for creating more effective learners. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Note taking, organization, questioning, and collaboration are all things AVID is helping our students learn.

We have our Dual Language Immersion Program for grades Kindergarten – 6th grade. Our DLI program offers English and Spanish speaking students an exciting, enriching, and challenging educational opportunity. Students in DLI will learn to read, write, and communicate effectively in both languages while demonstrating high levels of academic achievement. DLI education aims to ensure students become bilingual, bi-literate, and bicultural starting in the early years of school where children are best primed for language learning and readily open to cultural experiences. Our goal is that our DLI students graduate with the California Department of Education formally recognized Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diploma. The possibilities are endless as students at Mountain View progress towards their unlimited potential. It is with great pride that the Mountain View Elementary provides this educational opportunity to its students and community.

We believe that a student’s long- term health and well-being, and his capacity to contribute in a positive way to our world depends on a balance of social, emotional and core academic development. To support and build upon this foundation, Mt. View Elementary has adopted the 6 Pillars in Character Counts! This program is based on six values called the Six Pillars of Character.

  1. Trustworthiness
  2. Respect
  3. Responsibility
  4. Fairness
  5. Caring
  6. Citizenship

We believe that students must learn to reach beyond themselves. They must learn how to interact with others, how to listen, how to be sensitive to others' needs and how to be respectful of differing perspectives. Mt. View Elementary School recognizes the importance of creating and modeling a culture of good character and supporting all students as they learn integrity, personal responsibility and compassion. Adults and children in our school community are asked to model these character traits through personal example.

Extraordinary individuals will shape the 21st Century. Meeting the challenges of our increasingly complex and culturally interdependent world will require citizens who have a solid sense of who they are and a respect for others, in addition to being academically strong and capable.

Our hope is that each of our students builds a healthy self-concept, a sense of connection to others, and an appreciation for what it means to be a kind and good contributing member of a community. We recognize that this developmental journey spans a lifetime, but the foundation begins right here during the earliest school years.

Character Education begins with all of us . . . . . .

Whether your child is starting preschool with us, or entering 6th grade, we understand you are sharing with us your most prized commodity. We will do our best to earn your respect.

These are the things we ask of you:

  1. Get your child to school, on time, daily, except, of course, in the case of illness. It is critical to learning!

  2. Read with your child for 20 minutes nightly.

  3. See that your student completes his / her homework.

  4. “Take 5,” which is, take 5 minutes to talk about the school day each evening.

These four simple things will support your child more than you might imagine.

Thank you for entrusting us to walk alongside you on your child’s educational journey. We look forward to working with you and your child.
