Afterschool Program

The HEARTS Afterschool Program is a provided by a State grant awarded to the Riverside Unified School District. The grant is very competitive, therefore participation in the program has strict attendance expectations. The program is paid for by the grant, so there is no charge to families.

HEARTS is an extension of the school day for those students whose applications are granted. It is intended to support students who may otherwise be unsupervised during the hours after dismissal from school until the time parents return home from work. HEARTS is not a daycare program, however, but instead an additional 3 hour session of school each day. Full participation in the program is equal to attending 90 more days of school each year!

Students in the HEARTS afterschool program attend from the dismissal of school until 6:00 p.m. each weekday. They participate in a variety of activities to help support their learning.

  • Each afternoon session includes a physical education break and a nutritious snack.
  • Students attend an academic class for one hour each day where they receive instruction in key content standards. Some students also qualify for Intervention with a classroom teacher in the Fall.
  • Students have a minimum of half an hour each day to get started on homework, and will receive help with their homework as needed. Students also have the option to complete their homework instead of going to enrichment classes.
  • For the last hour and a half of HEARTS students are given many enrichment options to choose from:

--STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) activities

--Additionally, students may choose to earn several leadership roles within the program. Interested students sign-up for a variety of jobs, such as, running the HEARTS student store, being instructional assistants, running the check-out table, and tutoring. They may also have opportunities to teach small groups, read to younger students, and organize the game check-out system.

Unique to the Mt. View HEARTS program is a year of academic and enrichment activities that revolve around a yearly theme. Our theme this year is “iLearning…to Infinity and Beyond!” Students began the year learning about the brain and how learning takes place. Each month we will then investigate another “i” topic. Those monthly topics are: Intelligence, interaction, infrastructure, intergalactic, investigations, Internet, and imagination. Check out the photos to see learning in action!
